RefWorks

RefWorks Security Policy

The RefWorks software and all data saved using the program reside on RefWorks servers which are hosted at an off-site location that is monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Data backups are performed on a regular basis and stored in a separate location.

RefWorks uses reasonable commercial efforts to protect the privacy of the data saved by users of the RefWorks software. Access to the data is only allowed through the RefWorks program and requires the use of a login name and password which RefWorks monitors. Subscriptions are set up in such a way that, when possible, each user is also authenticated by IP address. The server does not have an ftp site or any email programs loaded so there are very limited ways to access the computer itself.

There will be occasions when users of the RefWorks software volunteer information about themselves. User-specific information volunteered in these instances is archived for RefWorks marketing and sales use only. RefWorks does not sell, rent or lease its customer lists to third parties. Additionally, when users initiate contact with RefWorks through the Web site or by e-mail, users will be informing RefWorks about their concerns, as well as contact information. RefWorks may want to use the information provided to respond to users and to continue to contact users in the future. If users do not want RefWorks to contact them, they may choose to "opt out," and RefWorks will respect that decision.

RefWorks reserves the right to disclose personal information if required to do so by law, or RefWorks in good faith believes that such action is necessary to: (a) conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal process served on RefWorks or the site; (b) protect and defend the rights or property of RefWorks; or (c) protect the personal safety of users of RefWorks, its web sites, or the public.
